Salir Adelante Financial Town Hall on Education

Saturday, 5/5/12 2pm – 3pm at Western Ave Community Center

State Farm Bank(R) in collaboration with Conexiones Latinas, Heartland Community College, and Western Ave Community Center will be hosting an open Q&A discussion with a local bilingual panel of financial and academic experts on financing and supporting your child’s education.

The professionals and alumni on the panel will speak on the fundamentals of preparing and planning for students (kindergarten to high school) succeed in school and pay for college. Parents and students will be able to ask any question they have on graduation, college prep, financing college, scholarships, reading levels, etc. Adults in attendance will be eligible to win a $50 gift card from State Farm Bank (certain restrictions apply).

West Side Soccer League – Spring Registration & Request for Community Support

 The West Side Soccer League is accepting registration for children who wish to participate in the 2012 Spring youth soccer activities to be held at Sunnnyside Park located at 407 East Erickson on the west side of Bloomington. These activities are provided free of charge to West Side youth ages 6-14 years of age. Registration deadline is 8 May.

Parents can register their children at: The YMCA, 602 S. Main, Bloomington or Western Avenue Community Center, 600 N. Western Avenue, Bloomington.

The first practice will be held on the week of May 14. All games are scheduled for Saturday mornings; the first game is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 9am.

The Immigration Project Fundraiser (B-N)

Come have a great happy hour party with Music (Frontera, popular local Latin band), Margaritas, and Mexican tamales and contribute to The Immigration Project. They are a nonprofit organization that offers free legal services to immigrants in the areas of citizenship, domestic violence, and family reunification. These immigrants generally have no other recourse for these important services!

New Data on Hispanic and Foreign-Born Populations in the U.S.

The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, released updated statistical profiles of the Latino and foreign-born populations in the U.S. These profiles, based on the Center’s tabulations from the Census Bureau’s 2010 American Community Survey, feature detailed characteristics of the Latino and foreign-born populations at the national level.

Topics covered include age, geographic dispersion, nativity, citizenship, origin, language proficiency, racial self-identification, living arrangements, marital status, fertility, schooling, health insurance coverage, earnings, poverty and other labor market outcomes. The data featured in the profiles may also be downloaded from the Center’s website.

The statistical profiles are available at the Pew Hispanic Center’s website, www.pewhispanic.org.

Charlas en Español (Spanish Conversation Hours) are held on Tuesdays at the Peoria Public Library – Lincoln Branch from 6-8 p.m. (1312 W. Lincoln Ave., Peoria, IL 61605). Come join us, who knows what you will learn! 

Cinema Latino – Friday, March 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the Peoria Public Libary – Main Branch. “Motorcycle Diaries” (Diarios de Motocicleta). 2004. Rated R. Starring Gael García Bernal. The movie is about a motorcycle road trip Che Guevara went on in his youth that showed him his life’s calling. Movie will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles. Entrance is free! Hope to see you there.

Afterwards, head down to the Riverfront to dance Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Reggaeton at the Contemporary Arts Center with DJ Ed Caballero. Friday, March, 16th 8:30-9:30 (Lesson) 9:30-12:30 a.m. open floor. $3.00 CAC members, $6 non-members

Peoria Hispanics will be supporting the Irish and marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade this coming Saturday, March 17th. Details to come!

CITY OF BLOOMINGTON SEEKS INPUT ON FUTURE ZOO PLAN
Meeting set for February 28 at Miller Park Pavilion

BLOOMINGTON – The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is seeking input from Miller Park neighbors and the general public to help determine the long term future of Miller Park Zoo.

Citizens are invited to attend open meetings at 6pm and 7pm on February 28 at Miller Park Pavilion. The meeting provides Miller Park neighbors and the rest of the public an opportunity to ask questions, provide input and discuss the future of Miller Park Zoo with City officials and the architects hired to develop the Master Plan.
