HFWG October Meeting

The HFWG Monthly Meeting scheduled for this Friday (10/1) has been cancelled in order to accommodate more schedules.

We would like to reschedule the October meeting (to be held at the McLean County Health Department) to discuss the future of the HFWG. To accomplish this we really need your  input as a community leader and member – even if you have never attended a meeting or it’s been a long time since you last attended a meeting. This is your opportunity to voice your opinions concerning the Hispanic and Latino community and help decide the direction of this organization for years to come. We would like to have as many people attend this meeting as possible and we need your help scheduling this meeting.

Please use this link http://www.doodle.com/ua7quws6qqdxkmn4 and add your name (or your organization’s name) and times available by October 7th. Then we will send out a meeting invite and agenda with additional details for the date the majority of you can attend.

Author recalls ’62 airlift from Cuba to Miami, B-N

By Michele Steinbacher |msteinbacher@pantagraph.com

When Carlos Eire visits Bloomington on Thursday, it will be a homecoming of sorts for the National Book Award winner and Yale University professor.

Eire, a Cuban refugee whose boyhood memoir, “Waiting for Snow in Havana” won the prestigious award in 2003, was one of roughly 14,000 children secretly whisked out of Cuba in the early 1960s as part of Operation Peter Pan. The plan was organized by the U.S. government and Catholics in Miami to aid families opposed to the Cuban revolution.

Carlos, then 11, and his 14-year-old brother Tony arrived in Miami in 1962. They lived in a series of group homes and foster homes for a year.

In 1963 they relocated to Bloomington to live with Carlos’ paternal aunt and uncle, and his two cousins, the Amado Nieto family of 609 E. Front St….

On Thursday, Eire will speak about his books during two public events, a 2 p.m. question-and-answer session at Bloomington Public Library, and a 7 p.m. talk at Illinois State University’s Braden Auditorium in the Bone Student Center. Twin City libraries and Barnes and Noble Booksellers are sponsoring the author’s visit.

Volunteers Needed for Cedar Ridge

Posted on 22nd September 2010 by Alex Cardona in Events

Cedar Ridge Elementary is having their annual Green Day at Cedar Ridge on Friday, October 1st from 1:00p.m. until 3:00p.m.  This day will be a kick off to the eight week reading program for the Kindergarten classes.

The students rotate through about twelve stations and complete various activities.  Each child is required to have an adult to help them through the rotations and that is where we need your help.  Unfortunately a lot of the kid’s parents cannot attend so they need volunteers to step in.  These volunteers don’t need any special qualities except a willingness to spend a couple of hours helping a Kindergarten student.

They need volunteers for the three hour block and they are looking for about 75 volunteers. For more information contact Jean Silva at 309-846-0502 or Jaqueline M Morales.
