Illinois is 1st state to require bilingual preschool programs
BLOOMINGTON ─ Bloomington Public Library has been chosen by the American Library Association (ALA) as one of 70 public libraries in 21 states to receive a $5,000 grant as part of “The American Dream Starts @ your library®” literacy project. This initiative is funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Bloomington Public Library joins libraries in large cities and rural towns throughout Dollar General’s market area. The Library will use these funds to expand its collection of materials ─ books, audio books and DVDs ─ for adult English language learners living and working in their community. The Library is working with the Star Literacy program to develop this selection of materials and intends to have the materials ready for circulation this winter. IWU to host forum on immigration reform

BLOOMINGTON — Illinois Wesleyan University will host a forum on immigration reform Thursday as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
A range of events — from academic explorations to community celebrations — are planned in the Twin Cities for the month, which officially runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Some of those are a Mexican celebration at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, salsa dancing lessons and a Puerto Rican dinner at IWU and a festival celebrating Latino culture at Illinois State University.
