Charlas en Español – Peoria

Come brush up on your Spanish, or help someone else improve theirs, by joining Peoria Hispanics at their weekly Charlas en Español (a.k.a. Spanish Conversation Hour) cohosted by the Peoria Public Library. People at all levels are encouraged to come and practice Spanish. We will have light refreshments and will be showing guests how to use the Library’s Language Learning Program called MANGO.

We will be meeting at the following:

Youth Soccer League Registration

The West Bloomington Youth Soccer League will have a registration activity THIS Sunday, 4 December at the Lawrence Irvin Community Center  from 4 PM – 6 PM.

The Book Bike will be at the event to give books away to program participants. A fire truck will also be on-site for the kids.

Volunteers are welcome - set-up will begin at 3 PM. Please contact Sal Valadez if you would like to volunteer.

West Bloomington Youth Soccer League

Three community organizations, the YMCA, Western Avenue Community Center, and the West Bloomington Revitalization Project announce the establishment of the West Bloomington Youth Soccer League (WBYSL), a collaborative effort to serve youth on the west side of Bloomington.  

This activity is provided free of charge to youth ages 6-14 years of age.

The Winter/Spring league registration day will be on Sunday, December 4th from 4 – 6 PM at the Lawrence Irvin Neighborhood Center located at 1615 W. Illinois, Bloomington for children and parents or guardians.  This activity will include program registration, a soccer demonstration, free food and refreshments, and a free book give-away provided by the Book Bike.

Parents can pre-register their children at:

  • The YMCA, 602 S. Main, Bloomington
  • Western Avenue Community Center, 600 N. Western Avenue, Bloomington.

All children that pre-register are required to attend the December 4th kick-off activity and be accompanied by their parents or guardians.

The community is invited to support this initiative by donating new and used youth soccer clothing, shoes and equipment.  Donations will be accepted from November 15 to January 15 at the following locations:

  • All Normal Fire Stations
  • Bloomington Fire Stations (Station 2/Hamilton St., Station 3/Empire St., Station 6/Oakland Ave)
  • The YMCA
  • Western Avenue Community Center

DEPARTMENT: Early Head Start
LOCATION: 427 W. Main Street
SALARY: $ 27,880 – $29,000
FLSA EXEMPTION Full Time/Non-Exempt

This is a non-exempt position which provides planned and regularly scheduled 1.5 hour home visits which includes Hispanic families with infants, toddlers or pregnant women.  

Responsibilities also involve the active participation and engagement with families enrolled in ESL classes, prevention and early intervention services, screenings and referral services.   Establishing partnerships to support children who are dual language learners (DLL) for optimal language development is required to promote and ensure school readiness.

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and equivalent work experience in social service or human development field;
  • Competent with professional translation and interpretation
  • Knowledge, understanding and experienced of the Hispanic culture is highly desirable;
  • Maintain a case load of twelve (12) infants and toddlers and their family.
  • Must have two (2) years Case Management experience or equivalent experience in social service or human development field;
  • Ability to manage and supervise groups;
  • Ability to make sound professional judgments;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Computer knowledgeable in various software applications
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job description;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License, reliable transportation and insurance coverage as required by the State of Illinois.
