Childhood Poverty Among Hispanics
Sets Record, Leads Nation
“The spread of poverty across the United States that began at the onset of the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and accelerated last year hit one fast-growing demographic group especially hard: Latino children.
…More Latino children are living in poverty—-6.1 million in 2010—-than children of any other racial or ethnic group. This marks the first time in U.S. history that the single largest group of poor children is not white. In 2010, 37.3% of poor children were Latino, 30.5% were white and 26.6% were black, according to an analysis of new data from the U.S. Census Bureau by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center.”

Migrant workers to get payout of $220,000 from seed company
“An Indiana seed company has agreed to pay more than $200,000 to 91 migrant farm workers, including several who formerly resided in the Rantoul area.
“Remington Hybrid Seed Co. of Remington, Ind., reached a settlement to make the payment. A 2008 federal lawsuit was filed against the company in Texas for violations of the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 and for breach of contract.
“The suit, settled in July, alleges the failure of a migrant-farm recruiter employed by the company to follow through on promises made to migrant workers.
“The company agreed to pay $220,000, including $68,000 in attorney fees…”

The American Red Cross of the Heartland will be holding two blood drives that specifically reach out to the Latino Community. Research has shown that a large percentage of Latinos in the United States have type O blood, universal donor. However, only 4% of Latinos give blood. By making these blood drives Latino-friendly with a bilingual staff, the Red Cross of the Heartland is looking to change this statistic. Nevertheless, this is not exclusive to Latinos; all are welcome to come and give blood.
The first blood drive will be held on Monday, July 25th, at The Arbors at Eastland Apartments [208 S. Prospect Road, Bloomington, IL 61704] from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
The second will be held on Friday July 29th at Western Avenue Community Center [600 N. Western Avenue, Bloomington, IL 61701] from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
You can call 309-662-0500 or visit http://www.archeartland.org/ to make an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. Please spread the word about these drives and help save lives!
