DEPARTMENT: Early Head Start
LOCATION: 427 W. Main Street
SALARY: $ 27,880 – $29,000
FLSA EXEMPTION Full Time/Non-Exempt

This is a non-exempt position which provides planned and regularly scheduled 1.5 hour home visits which includes Hispanic families with infants, toddlers or pregnant women.  

Responsibilities also involve the active participation and engagement with families enrolled in ESL classes, prevention and early intervention services, screenings and referral services.   Establishing partnerships to support children who are dual language learners (DLL) for optimal language development is required to promote and ensure school readiness.

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and equivalent work experience in social service or human development field;
  • Competent with professional translation and interpretation
  • Knowledge, understanding and experienced of the Hispanic culture is highly desirable;
  • Maintain a case load of twelve (12) infants and toddlers and their family.
  • Must have two (2) years Case Management experience or equivalent experience in social service or human development field;
  • Ability to manage and supervise groups;
  • Ability to make sound professional judgments;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Computer knowledgeable in various software applications
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job description;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License, reliable transportation and insurance coverage as required by the State of Illinois.

Peoria Hispanics Meeting Tonight

Peoria Hispanics will be hosting their monthly meeting today, Monday, October 10th at 5:30 p.m. at the American Red Cross in the Caterpillar Room. The American Red Cross is located at 311 W. John H. Gwynn, Jr. Ave. in Downtown Peoria. Come learn how to get involved with Peoria’s Latino community!

Also, don’t forget, the closing night of Peoria’s 1st Annual Latin-American Film Festival will be this Wednesday, Oct. 12th at 5:30 p.m. at the Peoria Public Library – North Branch.
They will be screening the film ”Real Women Have Curves” (2002, PG-13) starring America Ferrera of the television series ”Ugly Betty”. The story is about a first generation Mexican-American teenager on the verge of becoming a woman.

Documentary: “Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness”

A documentary focusing on anti-immigrant violence will be shown to mark “Not In Our Town Week of Action.” Communities across the country will host showings of “Not in Our Town: Light in the Darkness” about a New York town that comes together to openly address violence against the Latino community.The video follows how a community deals with the aftermath of a series of attacks in 2008 against Latino residents of Patchogue, NY and the murder of an Ecuadorian immigrant. The documentary, “Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness” airs Wednesday, Sept. 21st, at 9 p.m. on WTVP- Channel 47

Peoria Hispanics looking for volunteers

Peoria Hispanics will have presence in this year’s World Fest 2011. World Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 10th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Peoria Civic Center. Entrance is free.

They are currently looking for approximately 20 volunteers to help man Peoria Hispanics’ booth (the Peoria Hispanic Informational Booth, the World Market Booth, and the Taste Booth).

“PEORIA — George Washington Carver Community Center, an iconic institution with roots stretching back to the 1920s, is closing indefinitely Sept. 2.

“Board members say the closing is temporary to allow time to reorganize and restructure operations. But Carver supporters already are worrying about the possibility of the temporary shutdown becoming permanent.”
